Ayoub: "Peace with Israel is no longer a taboo"... and Hezbollah violated the ceasefire
Fady Mahouly
Member of the “Strong Republic” bloc, MP Ghada Ayoub, confirmed that “Lebanon has entered a new political phase and cannot return to the conditions before March 2 and to the time that has ended.”
She stressed that what came after March 2 represented a turning point that ended an entire stage and opened the door to a different reality, calling on the Lebanese to strengthen their confidence in their state and its institutions.
Ayoub stressed "the necessity of separating the existing diplomatic and political paths in the international arena," noting that "the path led by Washington differs from the path associated with the ongoing talks in Switzerland, and that each of them has its own goals and dimensions."
She asked: “Where is the power that Hezbollah boasts about? Is it in the destroyed homes and destroyed villages, or in the huge numbers of those who left their homes and spread out on the ground in the squares?
She said: "We are satisfied with being an arena for other people's wars, and we cannot accept weapons outside the framework of legitimacy after today, stressing that Hezbollah was the one who violated the ceasefire agreement that was announced on November 27, and that it is what pushed Lebanon into a new confrontation with all its repercussions on the southern regions, infrastructure, and the people of the south."
She added: "Contributing weapons to the state is no longer a political demand of a specific group. Rather, it has become a universal Lebanese demand for all Lebanese who aspire to the establishment of a state capable of extending its full authority and managing security and military affairs exclusively through legitimate institutions, far from any weapons outside the framework of the state."
She asked: “Why does Hezbollah not hand over maps of the tunnels and military installations in the south to the Lebanese army, which must have all the necessary data to carry out its tasks to the fullest extent?”
She recalled the Zabqin warehouse incident, saying that "what happened during the army raid raised many questions, while the required assistance to the military institution is necessary in this area."
Ayoub commented on US President Donald Trump’s message regarding assigning Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to follow up on Hezbollah’s weapons file, and described it as very smart, but her interpretation was wrong because what President Trump meant was that disarmament had become a foregone conclusion, regardless of who might contribute to disarmament, whether it was Iran, Syria, or the Lebanese state.
On the issue of peace with Israel, she said: “It is no longer a taboo, and after the Gulf-American statement, the party’s disarmament, and the Israeli withdrawal, all countries are going to peace.”
She concluded: “The priority today is to strengthen the authority of the Lebanese state and consolidate the role of its institutions as a basic gateway to rebuilding internal confidence and opening a new page and a new phase of political and security stability in Lebanon.”
